Nieuwe Kerk

Nieuwe Kerk

Nieuwe Kerk

Located next to Dam Square, in the heart of the historic center, is one of the most important buildings in Amsterdam: the Nieuwe Kerk.

The New Church dates back to the 15th century.

Its pointed arches and huge stained glass windows have witnessed the royal weddings and the coronation of the Dutch monarchs since 1814.

The construction of the Nieuwe Kerk was motivated because, despite the various extensions that took place in the Old Church (Oude Kerk), more space was needed to gather the faithful. The works lasted approximately 150 years.

The New Church was built thanks to the wealthy merchant Willem Eggert who donated a large sum of money and the garden on which to build this church in Gothic style.

It is impossible to visit Amsterdam and not go past the door of the New Church several times due to its central and privileged situation next to Dam Square and the Royal Palace.

Its interior is not too spectacular and, unless you have the visit included having bought the I Amsterdam Card, we do not consider it necessary to go beyond the box office and the church shop. The interior of Oude Kerk is quite striking.
