Useful Information about Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the major airport in the Netherlands and the fifth-largest in Europe. With its close proximity to Amsterdam and great rail and road connections to the rest Europe, Schiphol Airport is also one of the continent’s most important flight hubs.


With fantastic shopping opportunities and plenty of facilities, Schiphol airport is composed by a single terminal centered on a shopping plaza stocked with loads of great buys and fun things to do. There are 3 departures halls connected to the central building and one “low-cost” departure hall (also known as Pier M). Be aware that once entered in Pier M will be not possible to get back to the rest of the airport.

Airport Facilities

Luggage: Lost baggage needs be reported to each airline. Baggage and items lost within the airport can be located through the airport’s lost and found office. Luggage stores are available for passengers for a maximum period of 1 week. Lockers can be found in arrival lounges and main building. The left luggage service fares are between €5-10 per day, depending on the size of each bag. Seal & Go offers a luggage-wrapping service, starting from €7.50, located in departure halls #2 and #3.

Money and currency exchange: ATMs and currency exchange offices are available both in the arrivals and departures halls.

Conference and business: A fully-equipped conference centre is available at Schiphol airport. The business facility includes a reception hall, with Internet access and plug-in points, which can accommodate up to 80 guests and catering service. The conference centre is located above the departures hall on the third floor. Reservations can be made directly through the Schiphol airport website.

Other facilities: A first-aid center and medical clinic are available at Schiphol, open from Monday to Saturday between 8:30am and 3:30pm (departures hall 2). There is also a pharmacy located in the same area, open from 8:30 until 5pm.

Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi service is available at the airport. There is also a paid / faster Wi-Fi option. Both services are accessible through the airport website.

Shopping: The main shopping area at Schiphol is the Schiphol Plaza, which is open every day from 7am to 10pm. These shops include newspapers, tobacconists, a hairdressing salon, florists, electronics-gadgets, America Today, Nike, a Crocs shop, an H&M, as well as perfumeries, fashion items, name branded clothing and jewelry. The duty-free shops can be found beyond passport control. They open an hour before the first flight of the day and close 30 minutes after the last flight.

Food and drink: Schiphol Airport has a broad range of restaurants, snack bars and pubs available with a wide range of options from sushi to freshly made sandwiches. Most places at Schiphol are open between 7am and 8pm. Travelers needing a late night bite, midnight snack or pre-dawn caffeine fix can choose between Bread! in lounge #3 or Cone Bar in lounge #2, opened 24 hours a day. There is a food court with fast food options including McDonald’s and Sbarro’s on the upper level of the building.

Additional ways to get from Schiphol airport to the city

In addition to taxis and private transfers, also Train and Buses are running from Amsterdam airport to city. Train is the quicker way, with a 20 minutes long ride; Bus is the cheapest option, with a cost of 5€ per passenger and a 35 minutes ride.

There is a train direct connection between the centre of Amsterdam and the airport; with a frequency of 10 trains per hour from 06:00AM to 01:00AM. Night trains are running once an hour, from 02:00AM to 05:00AM

The cost of a one-way standard ticket is 5,40€ (8,40€ for first class) and it can be purchased both from the automated machines and the tickets counters located in the arrivals hall of the airport.

Trains departures are located 1 level below the arrivals hall, at platform 1 to 3.

People travelling to the centre should take the Intercity Direct train (quickest option), running 2 times every hour between the airport to the centre of the city (15 minutes ride)

People travelling to other destinations could take the standard Dutch double decker Intercity, which makes multiple stops.

Buses are cheaper but longer option; the ride to the city centre is 35 minutes and departures are every 15 minutes.

There are 2 options available: Connexxion 197 Amsterdam Airport Express, from 05:00AM to 00:30AM and N97 Niteliner, hourly between 01:00AM and 05:00AM
